About

N. Van Kannel is a speculative novelist whose work blurs the boundaries of science fiction and fantasy. With a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and published research on sustainability and equity, she brings uncommon depth to her fiction—grounding imaginative worlds in urgent, real-world questions.

Her forthcoming debut novel, Water Starved, is an environmental dystopia set in a drought-ravaged future where survival hinges on courage, resilience, and the search for water. The story reflects her fascination with humanity’s fragile relationship with the Earth.

At the heart of all her work are the values that guide her life: compassion, courage, and love. Whether through eco-dystopias or intimate short stories, she invites readers to imagine not only new worlds but also new ways of being in our own.

She lives in a forest in Olympia, Washington, with her husband Tom, and two cats, a ragdoll and a rescue. In her free time, she can be found reading, daydreaming, and spending time with her family.
